Ginger is a rhizome buried in the soil. Appeared as an ordinary and simple rhizome plant, it is used everywhere in food, spice, dessert, shampoo, shower gel, detergent, and medicine. After processing, it is absorbed by our stomach, hair, skin pores, toenails, etc.
Wing Po So employed materials that are usually hidden in spaces: filters in the air conditioner, plastic plugs in concrete to fill the space between screws and drilled holes, and brass water pipe fittings behind the wall. These structural accessories suggest the movement and density of air, the flow of water, and a load of weights – bringing mobility to fixed structures, ubiquity to hidden parts, blurring the boundary between above ground and underground.
Daily necessities and tools such as a broom, a tweezer, and detergent bottle caps interact with ginger root in ways that reveal the daily experience of man-made nature. Furthermore, different forms of ginger are presented: powdered, fibrous, sliced, and burnt – revealing the physical transformation of ginger as a medicinal ingredient or in food preparation.
