Invisible Island

Invisible Island

Invisible Island, 2021

Rich in ecological resources, Lamma Island is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Artist So Wing-po collects different species of algae, fungi, plants, and insects from around the island and subjects them to decellularisation – a biomedical engineering process that can be used in tissue and organ regeneration.

Having had their living cells and proteins removed, the organisms are left with a somewhat odd, and pale translucent appearance. Together with a collection of related fictitious stories, the de-celled organisms are on display in Sok Kwu Wan, where visitors are invited to enter the imaginary parallel world hidden from everyday life. Lying dormant in containers, the remaining scaffolds of the de-celled organisms are displayed adjacent to the large fish tank inside a seafood restaurant, creating a surreal dialogue. Seem to be in hibernation, the hollow organisms are waiting for their opportunity to be repopulated with living cells and connect metonymically with the invisible island.

Humans and nature are facing unprecedented crises, completely shattering all structures that were once “normal”. The making of voids seems to be a violent procedure, but in fact, it is to open up our imagination towards the future relationship between human beings and our surrounding nature.
